Sugar Bears and Bonding
|
|
|
| |
|
| |
As babies, many Sugar Bears bite and cry, even to the point of seeming
aggression. These little handfuls are sometimes
considered incorrigible and their new owners stop
playing with them. This is the biggest mistake a new
pocket pet owner can do. Your little Sugar Bear is
most likely not mean. He absolutely does not hate you no
matter how much to the contrary it may seem to you.
It is very important to realize that no matter what you
may have read from sources online, not all Sugar Bears
bond at the same rate. While it is true that the
majority of Sugar Bears become instantly bonded to their new
owners, some can take months!
If your new pocket pet is one of the hold outs, don’t
give up on your little tough guy. Persistence and gentle
handling no matter how upset or ‘aggressive’ he may seem
will win the day. Keep picking up your Sugar Bear and
handling them at every chance.
The only real way to insure your Sugar Bear does not
bond with you ever is to completely stop handling him.
There is a tendency to want to put a glove on your hand
before picking up your diminutive toughie. That is a big
mistake as the main way a Sugar Bear learns to
bond with you is through smell.
If he can only smell the glove he won’t bond. There is a
method you can use to pick up your Sugar Bear if he is
awake and acting like he is going to rip into your hand
if you put it in his cage and that is to take his
beloved pouch and turn it inside out in with your hand
inside it. Reach in and grab your screaming, crying
little devil and turn the pouch back right side out
around him. No matter what—don’t give up. He’ll soon
become an adoring pet for years
to come.
