Sugar Bear Handling

Something that is often overlooked in the handling of new pocket pets is hand sanitation. In their excitement over owning these delightful creatures for the first time many new owners forget about making sure to always wash their hands before handling their Sugar Bears.

Sugar Bears are extremely affectionate and curious. They also have a very good sense of smell. The combination of these two things is what makes them such an exciting pocket pet. It also makes them vulnerable to the problems of licking your hands when you haven’t washed them. Their sense of smell alerts them to a curious smell that you will not detect. You may have germs, or dirt on your hands, under your fingernails, or whatever and your Sugar Bear is sure to want to check it out.

This can lead to illness quickly. Be sure to keep an eye out for the signs of sickness in your Sugar Bear. Of course, it is wise to wash your hands after handling your Sugar Bear just as it is with handling any animal. While there are no known instances of Sugar Bears passing disease onto their human "pets," as they seem to think of us, it is always a safe procedure that makes sense.

Signs of illness in the Sugar Bear are: wobbly gait when walking, diarrhea, sticky stools, and not eating their apples. Any of these problems indicate a state of emergency in the Sugar Bear. Illness can strike and kill them quickly. Oftentimes in less than 2 days, so it is wise to not ignore any possible warning signs of illness in your Sugar Bear.
